Tesla Emergency Drive Away Can Result In $539 Service Visit

Tesla’s Emergency Drive Away feature allows a vehicle to depart a Supercharger in an urgent situation without unplugging first. However, activating it can have repercussions even if the car never moves.

According to X user @Tutrifour, Tesla Service will charge $539 to inspect the charge port and clear the alert after Emergency Drive Away was activated, “even if you didn’t move the car an inch.”

How It’s Activated

Tesla introduced Emergency Drive Away earlier this month with software update 2026.38.3. Normally, Teslas won’t shift out of Park while plugged in, but this option exists as a last resort if you feel threatened or need to leave a Supercharger quickly.

If you attempt to shift while the vehicle is still connected, a red warning appears on the touchscreen. To proceed, you must hold the brake and tap “Activate.”

What Follows After Activation

Once engaged, the car can shift into gear, and the charging handle is designed to break away from the port as you drive off. Short camera clips are also transmitted to Tesla to help verify a genuine emergency.

The vehicle then flags that service is required. A photo shared by @Tutrifour shows a persistent red alert on the touchscreen stating, “Emergency Drive Away has been activated,” alongside a note that service is needed. Because a breakaway can damage the charge port, Tesla requires an inspection before charging normally again. According to @Tutrifour, that inspection cost $539 even though the car remained stationary. They also noted the vehicle would still charge while the service alert was displayed.

If you do pull away, expenses can escalate. Tesla says repairing a damaged Supercharger stall can cost up to $25,000, and misuse can lead to penalties.

Read Prompts Carefully

Accidental activations are already occurring. The first documented use of Emergency Drive Away at an Austin Supercharger involved a tired driver tapping through the prompts and driving off with the cable still attached.

Tesla’s Director of Charging, Max de Zegher, has said the feature will be improved quickly based on feedback. Since Tesla receives camera clips whenever Emergency Drive Away is triggered and vehicle telemetry would indicate whether the car moved while plugged in, a potential enhancement could be to clear the service alert remotely when both confirm the vehicle never left the stall. Until then, it’s wise to read every on-screen prompt closely before tapping “Activate.”
