Should Tesla Introduce UI Themes?

Personalization has quickly become one of the most enjoyable parts of owning a Tesla. Over time, the user experience has expanded to include custom vehicle wraps, license plates, and lock sounds, and there is still room to grow.

A post by Alexander Kristensen (@LinkN01) helped spark discussion about custom user interfaces after he shared a concept rendering of Tesla UI themes. The mockup illustrates how options such as a neon Cyberpunk look, a clean minimalist style, or an earthy organic skin could dramatically reshape the appearance—and potentially the functionality—of the vehicle’s interface.

Software Customization

Adding themes to in-vehicle displays is within reach. On the hardware side, Tesla vehicles already support personalization, letting drivers store seating profiles, favorite apps, and driving dynamics. Extending that control to the software interface is a logical evolution.

Under the hood, the infotainment system is built on a heavily customized, Linux-based operating system originally derived from Ubuntu. Many native Tesla apps already use web technologies. Things like the Dashcam Viewer, music player, FSD Stats, and energy graphs utilize standard HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Updating the visual styling of these apps could be as straightforward as swapping the underlying CSS stylesheet.

Real-World Uses

Tesla has already embraced playful customization. Drivers can already customize Tesla lock sounds with custom audio files, and they can apply custom wraps and license plates to their vehicle visualization to personalize onscreen car models. Full UI themes would build on these options.

The possibilities reach beyond simple color changes. The angular, geometric UI currently exclusive to the Cybertruck could be offered as an opt-in theme for the rest of the lineup, giving Model 3 or Model Y owners access to the futuristic interface.

Functional themes could provide practical benefits as well. High-contrast skins could improve visibility during bright, sunny drives, while accessibility-focused options could add larger touch targets and bolder fonts to simplify on-the-go navigation.

As the software continues to develop, a theme picker in the Toybox or Display settings could give owners another way to make the cabin feel uniquely theirs.
