A Look at Teslas Fan-Cooled Wireless Phone Charger and DIY Retrofit

Micha42 Gapi44ski (@mikegapinski), the software engineer behind the Tesla Android project that unofficially brings Apple CarPlay to any Teslas touchscreen in the continued absence of an official implementation, recently completed a DIY transplant of the new wireless phone charging pad from the six-seat Model Y L into a refreshed Model Y Premium.
Teslas built-in wireless chargers have been a long-standing gripe for owners. In most 2025-or-later Model Y vehicles, the pad is rated for up to 15 watts, but without a mechanism to keep the phone precisely aligned, power transfer is inefficient. Real-world charging often hovers around 5W, with excess energy lost as heat. The pads also lack active cooling, so phones tend to get hotter the longer they sit on the charger.
The Model Y Ls Air-Cooled Phone Charger
The Model Y Ls revised wireless pad addresses thermal issues by actively cooling the phone. It integrates two fans on the rear (one per charging position) and vents that direct airflow across the back and sides of the device.

The cooling solution helps prevent overheating and enables sustained wireless charging speeds of up to 50W. Along with active cooling, the pads peak rate is more than 3x higher than the one currently in the Model Y. It still does not support Qi2 or Apple MagSafe, so there are no magnets to perfectly align the phones coil with the charger, but it is a clear improvement over the prior design.
Installation and Compatibility
Gapi44ski installed the Model Y L charger in his Model Y, and it fits the Juniper refreshs center console perfectly. He shared on X:
"The retrofit worked, no issues. First Model Y with a cooled wireless charger! No QI2/faster charging on the iPhone but it does not boil the phone even when it is 30 degrees outside."
Heres what the mod looks like in action:

While the physical swap was straightforward thanks to identical connectors, getting the replacement recognized was not. Teslas Toolbox software would not allow coding the part change. He eventually got it working through brute force and has offered to remotely program the retrofit for others who attempt the same.

The OEM Model Y L charger costs under $200 USD in China. According to Gapi44ski, the retrofit is feasible only on Juniper Model Ys (early 2025 and later deliveries) and not on the entry-level Standard variant. Both the Premium and Performance trims should be compatible. Pre-Juniper Model Ys use a different center console, so the pad will not fit. He added that it might also work in the 93Highland 94 Model 3, stating, "I'll take a look at the Highland next, if the OEM charger has the same PN as the Y it should fit."
Global Expansion of the Model Y L
The Model Y L debuted in China last summer at 339,000 yuan (about $50,000 USD). It is positioned as a family-focused SUV with a longer wheelbase than the standard Model Y, a stretched body, and seating for six in a 2-2-2 layout. It also includes a larger 16-inch central touchscreen and a softer, comfort-oriented suspension. The wheelbase is 150mm (5.9 inches) longer than the standard Model Y, and overall length increases by 179mm (7 inches).
After months of China-only availability, the Model Y L is gradually expanding to additional markets. A U.S. launch is expected in the coming months, and the long-wheelbase variant was recently spotted track-testing at Teslas Fremont factory in California.
As availability broadens, sourcing parts will become easier, simplifying retrofits for existing Model Y owners. Given the chargers improvements and customer interest, Tesla may add the new unit to future Model Y builds as part of a mid-cycle refresh, particularly once Model Y L production scales up in the U.S.
