Cybertruck

According to a new finding in the Tesla Service Toolbox, the Cybertruck contains the hardware required for Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) — the same hardware found on the Model S and Model X — but the capability is currently disabled in software.

“As of 30-Jan-2025, ANC software is not enabled on Cybertruck even though the hardware is installed.”

Although the Cybertruck is already among the quieter vehicles on the road, this indicates Tesla planned for an even quieter cabin through ANC.

A Flagship Feature

Active Noise Cancellation is a signature feature of Tesla’s flagship models, the Model S and Model X. In those vehicles, the system operates similarly to high-end noise-cancelling headphones: six microphones placed throughout the cabin, together with accelerometers near the wheels, monitor cabin noise and wheel frequency.

The audio system then produces anti-noise — inverted sound waves — to cancel low-frequency road rumble and tire hum.

The Cybertruck’s hardware presence (notably with only four cabin microphones rather than six) suggests Tesla has provisioned the vehicle for ANC, even if the software has not yet been activated.

Why is it Disabled?

The likely reason for the delay is the Cybertruck’s unusual cabin acoustics, which present a more complex acoustic environment than the Model S or Model X.

As a large, angular vehicle with a vast glass canopy and windshield, the Cybertruck creates different sound behavior. Tesla also routed audio from the subwoofers through the dead air within the vehicle’s frame using its unique castings, increasing perceived volume for music and sound. That dead airspace means the audio system would need to contend with additional acoustic paths to cancel road noise effectively.

The much larger standard All-Terrain tires on the Cybertruck also likely produce a different noise frequency than the road-optimized tires used on the Model S and Model X, which may be easier for ANC to mask.

Taking these factors together, enabling ANC on the Cybertruck appears to be a software engineering challenge tied to its distinctive acoustics, even though cabin noise is already reasonably low.

What This Means for Owners

For existing owners, the presence of the hardware means the Cybertruck is prepared for a possible future comfort upgrade. If Tesla completes the necessary tuning, the feature could be delivered via an over-the-air update, enabling ANC once the engineering work is finished.
