As of December 23, 2025, Tesla has opened an active Engineering Investigation into the performance of the Cybertruck's substantial windshield wiper, affectionately dubbed the Gigawiper. This decision comes despite software enhancements made earlier in the year. A recent message shared by a Cybertruck owner highlights that Tesla is not only looking into the issues but is also replacing entire wiper arm assemblies while a more permanent solution is being developed.

Cybertruck Gigawiper

Initially, the original V1 wiper arm assembly in numerous early Cybertrucks was replaced with a V2 model. However, service personnel indicate that a V3 version is already in the testing phase.

The Challenges of the Gigawiper

The Cybertruck incorporates the largest single wiper blade found on a passenger vehicle, measuring an impressive 4 feet in length, designed to effectively clean the vehicle's extensive and flat windshield. However, many owners have reported recurring frustrations with this component. The first-generation units were subject to a recall in June 2024 due to malfunctioning wiper motors, yet issues related to the wiper’s cleaning performance have continued, particularly in colder climates.

Specific complaints include:

  • Improper stowage at high speeds, where the wiper arms do not return to the correct angle, slightly obstructing the driver’s view.
  • Poor contact during operation, leading to ineffective cleaning over crucial forward-facing Full Self-Driving (FSD) cameras and the passenger side of the windshield, often rendering FSD unavailable in certain conditions.
  • Faulty washer fluid delivery due to kinks in the hose assembly or loose fittings, which causes leaks or dribbles rather than a proper spray, compounding the cleaning issues.

Addressing Software and Hardware Issues

Tesla made efforts to rectify some of these concerns through over-the-air (OTA) software updates, including version 2025.2.8, which aimed to refine the wiper’s movement and improve its stowaway behavior. Nonetheless, the latest service communication suggests that software adjustments alone may not resolve the ongoing challenges. Confirmation of the investigation indicates Tesla's recognition of a possible mechanical deficiency in the wiper arm assembly, potentially involving issues with spring tension, hose mounting, or the overall structural integrity, rather than mere calibration errors.

Implications for Cybertruck Owners

For Cybertruck owners facing wiper-related issues, it is advisable to log a service request. Changing the wiper blade to a new one appears to alleviate some problems, although it may not provide a comprehensive solution. While Tesla continues to explore a permanent fix, it is actively developing revised components in the meantime.
