SpaceX announced on X a strategic partnership with AI coding startup Cursor that includes an option to purchase the company for $60 billion, marking one of the most assertive consolidation moves in artificial intelligence.
The Colossus Advantage
The companies plan to combine Cursor’s widely used AI developer tools with SpaceX’s unprecedented raw computing resources, bolstered by its massive merger with xAI earlier this year. The merger places SpaceX in control of the Memphis-based Colossus supercomputer.
According to the announcement, the collaboration will utilize SpaceX’s million H100 equivalent Colossus training supercomputer alongside Cursor’s distribution to software engineers. The objective is to create the most useful and advanced AI models for coding and knowledge work globally. By pairing one of the industry’s preferred front-end coding assistants with what is described as the world’s largest computing cluster, the companies aim to lead the AI developer market.
A $60 Billion Option
As part of the agreement, Cursor has formally given SpaceX the right to acquire the startup later this year for $60 billion.
If SpaceX does not proceed with the full acquisition, the parties have an alternative arrangement in which SpaceX would pay Cursor $10 billion for the collaborative work they produce together.
The figures highlight the rising importance of AI-assisted development. Cursor was reportedly in funding discussions last month at a $50 billion valuation, putting the $60 billion acquisition option in line with that valuation.
Building an AI Conglomerate
In February 2026, Musk merged his AI startup xAI into SpaceX, valuing the combined organization at $1.25 trillion. He described the merger as a step toward eventually powering resource-intensive AI models with off-planet, solar-powered data centers.
Through its work with Cursor, SpaceX is assembling a vertically integrated AI pipeline: raw compute with Colossus, consumer-facing chatbot models with Grok, and now a professional product layer for software engineers.
As SpaceX prepares for what many analysts expect to be the largest initial public offering in history, establishing a strong position in the AI developer market underscores its evolution beyond rockets and satellites into what it presents as the world’s most powerful AI conglomerate.
