Rivian Adds Waze Integration, Should Tesla Follow Suit?

Real-time road hazard alerts are coming to native vehicle dashboards. Rivian recently confirmed that Waze alerts will be integrated into the in-cabin navigation system for R1 and R2 models in an upcoming software update.
Rivian Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid announced the integration on X, saying:
“Real-time alerts from Waze are coming to R1 and R2 in-vehicle navigation, starting with speed cameras and police reports in the 2026.31 OTA update. More data and alerts to follow!”
The news quickly drew interest from Tesla owners, who have long asked for Waze functionality on the center touchscreen.
What Tesla Already Offers in Its Navigation
Tesla has avoided enabling third-party apps like Waze, but it has gradually added its own crowdsourced navigation capabilities.
In 2023, Tesla added speed camera and construction icons, showing visual warnings on the map for speed traps, red light cameras, and active road work.

These features launched in select regions based on available data, and recent releases such as the Summer 2026 feature drop have brought the alerts to additional areas.
To receive this routing information, drivers need to enable Online Routing under Navigation in the vehicle Settings, along with an active Premium Connectivity subscription ($10/month or $99/year in the U.S.). While Tesla can use static map data and neural networks to recognize stop signs and traffic lights, live items like speed traps and temporary work zones depend on third-party aggregated databases—in this case, Google.

Expanding Real-Time Data
Rivian’s approach with Waze brings a broader set of live, community-reported items—such as police sightings, accidents, and road debris—directly into its maps. By comparison, Tesla focuses on less time-sensitive information like road closures and speed cameras.
For Tesla owners seeking those richer real-time reports, the absence of a dedicated Waze app or data tie-in remains a barrier. Reports indicate Tesla is working with Apple on native CarPlay support, but with no release date, many rely on workarounds like the Tesla Android project to run CarPlay for Waze on the center display, or simply use Waze on their phones.
If direct data integrations do not materialize, expanding the built-in hazard database would be a logical next step—adding user-reported police traps, road debris notifications, and disabled vehicle alerts to the Tesla map to enhance situational awareness for drivers and FSD.
