Tesla Manuals Now Use SI Computer Instead of FSD Computer
Tesla has begun referring to its FSD computers as the “SI Computer” in the Owner’s Manual. The wording now appears across manuals for the Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck (H/T to @Tesla_App_iOS).
Under the emerging scheme, HW2.0, HW2.5, HW3, and AI4 would be relabeled SI2.0, SI2.5, SI3, and SI4.
What the Manual Says Now
In the Model Y manual’s FSD section, it now states:
“The SI Computer installed in Model Y is designed to use this input, rapidly process neural networks, and make decisions to guide you to your destination.”
The Climate Controls section also uses the new name, noting the feature “is not supported in vehicles with SI Computer 2.0 or 2.5.” It further instructs owners: “Touch Controls > Software and look at SI Computer to find out which computer your vehicle has.” Previously, this was listed as AI Computer.
The updated documentation suggests the SI Computer label could appear on the vehicle touchscreen in an upcoming software update.
Why Tesla Is Dropping “AI”
The shift aligns with Elon Musk’s recent renaming of SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI (SpaceX Super Intelligence). Tesla AI has likewise become Tesla Super Intelligence, or Tesla SI. This followed President Trump’s executive order directing executive-branch agencies to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” instead of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” in official materials.
It is not Tesla’s first hardware rename. Tesla previously renamed HW4 to AI4, while HW3 kept its name. Tesla has confirmed HW3 won’t support unsupervised autonomy, and it plans to offer hardware upgrades for HW3 vehicles to make them compatible with unsupervised FSD. VP Ashok Elluswamy recently said Tesla could start rolling out unsupervised FSD by Q2 2027.
AI5 Could Become SI5
The new naming would also extend to upcoming chips. Tesla’s next‑gen AI5, now in trial production at Samsung’s Texas fab, could debut as SI5, with subsequent parts following as SI6 and beyond.
Tesla has not officially announced the rename. If the manual changes are any indication, SI Computer labels may begin appearing on vehicle screens in a future software update.
