Tesla Adds Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) to Model Y Premium — Check If Yours Is Compatible

Tesla is broadening vehicle-to-load support for the Model Y lineup. The Tesla Outlet Adapter is now listed as compatible with the Model Y Premium, alongside the Model Y Performance, Model Y L, and Cybertruck. For the Model Y Premium, compatibility applies only to recently built vehicles.

The necessary hardware was added to the Model Y Premium only recently, excluding earlier Juniper builds and all pre-Juniper vehicles.

Tesla Adds Model Y Premium Support

In the U.S. shop, Tesla lists the Model Y Premium, Model Y Performance, and Cybertruck as compatible with the $80 Outlet Adapter. The adapter also appears as an optional accessory on the order page when a buyer selects a Model Y Premium.

The less expensive Model Y Standard is not supported, and no Model 3 variants are listed as compatible at this time.

Earlier updates brought V2L support to the Model Y Performance and to the Model Y L with Powershare hardware.

How to Check If Your Model Y Is Compatible

Most Model Ys are not supported because they do not include the required hardware.

Owners have reported that refreshed Model Ys built as recently as May 2026 appear incompatible. Reports from June-built vehicles are mixed, suggesting Tesla likely swapped parts around that time. When attempting to purchase the adapter, Tesla verifies eligibility using the vehicle’s VIN.

To check whether your vehicle is compatible, open the Tesla Shop in the Tesla app and search for the outlet adapter. On the product page, Tesla will indicate whether your Model Y is compatible with the device.

The determining factor appears to be the Power Conversion System (PCS). The PCS is part of Tesla’s high-voltage power electronics and handles power conversion involved in functions such as AC charging. Newer PCS revisions can support the bidirectional power flow needed to send energy back out through the charge port.

Tesla Outlet Adapter Capabilities

The Tesla Outlet Adapter turns a vehicle into a portable source of AC power, but it requires a Gen 3 Mobile Connector. To use it, replace the outlet plug on the Mobile Connector with Tesla’s Outlet Adapter and plug the other end into the vehicle.

The adapter provides two 110-volt outlets capable of up to 20 amps, or about 2,400 watts. That output is sufficient for almost any appliance or power tool, including higher-draw devices such as a small portable heater or a portable AC unit.

This change to the Model Y does not add full Powershare support or the ability to serve as a whole-home backup, which the Cybertruck can provide with its Powershare-capable Wall Connector.

While the feature is extremely useful, the Mobile Connector’s long cable can be cumbersome for smaller appliances. In China, Tesla sells a much more compact outlet adapter that plugs directly into the vehicle. It remains to be seen whether a similar product will be released in North America.
