Tesla Adds Passkey Support to Tesla App

Tesla is rolling out a notable security enhancement to its mobile app. In the iOS app update version 4.61.0, which began reaching owners on Friday, the company added passkey support to make sign-in faster and more secure.

The new capability allows drivers to use passkeys instead of traditional passwords, relying on biometric authentication and device-bound cryptographic keys.

Why Passkeys Are a Big Deal

A passkey is a digital credential that lets you sign in with Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode rather than typing a password. Passkeys use two cryptographic components: a private key stored on your phone and a public key registered with Tesla’s authentication servers.

Because there is no password to enter or remember, passkeys are highly resistant to phishing and data breaches. Even if someone sets up a fake login page and tricks you into attempting to sign in, your device will not release the private key because it won’t receive a valid request from Tesla’s authentication servers. For owners, it turns accessing a Tesla account into a quick biometric check.

How to Enable Passkeys in the Tesla App

Setup takes less than a minute within the app:

Open the Menu.
Tap your profile name and select Security & Privacy.
Choose Sign In Management.
Tap Passkey, which opens a secure Tesla authentication window.
Tap the blue Add Passkey button and follow the onscreen instructions.

After setup, the Sign In Management menu will show Passkey as enabled directly beneath your multi-factor authentication status. The same app update is also rolling out to Android users, where passkey support is expected to work similarly using fingerprint authentication and Google’s credential management.

More App Upgrades on the Horizon

Passkeys add welcome convenience, and larger software enhancements may be close behind. While passkeys protect account access, Tesla Robotaxi app features such as remote vent direction controls, seat adjustment sliders, ambient lighting control, and in-app YouTube browsing could eventually make their way into the standard consumer app.

For now, turning on passkeys provides an easy way to secure your Tesla account while avoiding the hassle of password resets.
