Ford has revealed its long-anticipated budget electric pickup, the Ford Fathom, with a base price of $28,350, aiming squarely at the entry-level midsize truck market.
The launch follows Ford’s renewed push into electric trucks after early sales of the premium F-150 Lightning cooled. Detailing the specs on X, @TesCalendar1 noted that the midsize pickup is the first vehicle built on Ford’s new Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform, offering more interior passenger space than a Toyota RAV4, plus a front trunk and a compact rear bed similar to the gas-powered Ford Maverick.

Pre-orders are scheduled to open in early 2027, with initial customer deliveries set for fall 2027 from Ford’s Louisville, Kentucky, manufacturing plant. Ford said:
“It offers next-generation BlueCruise capability and bidirectional power capability, and it’s projected to have more passenger volume than the Toyota RAV4. A large touchscreen display offers easy-to-use navigation, powered by Apple Maps. A Digital Key, Ford app remote control, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility are all standard.”
“We named it Fathom because real depth comes from deeply understanding how you live,” Ford added. “Inspired by the classic measure of open arms, Fathom welcomes you in with an expansive interior and technology that adapts on the fly. Designed so you don't have to settle, there’s far more beneath the surface than meets the eye.”
Tesla Cybertruck Innovations Repackaged for the Masses
Although the Fathom presents as a conventional compact truck reminiscent of the Maverick, its underlying hardware aligns closely with the Cybertruck.
The program was led by former Tesla executives Doug Field and Alan Clarke, who applied first-principles engineering to develop the UEV platform. Instead of traditional 12-volt wiring, the Fathom uses a full 48-volt electrical system with zonal controllers. The internal redesign consolidates dozens of third-party modules into five Ford-made computers, shortens the wiring harness by over 4,000 feet, and trims 22 pounds compared to a Mustang Mach-E (which is about the same size).
Manufacturing mirrors Tesla’s gigacasting strategy. Ford replaced 146 stamped body components with two large aluminum castings, which it calls “Unicasting.” A structural LFP battery pack also serves as the floor frame, reducing production costs by 20-30% while targeting over 300 miles of range through improved aerodynamics.
Final assembly draws from Tesla’s “unboxed” approach, swapping a mile-long assembly line for a space- and labor-efficient “assembly tree.” Teams attach seats and interior trim directly to the open battery core before joining the front and rear unicastings over it, shrinking workstation footprints by 40% and increasing build speed by 15%.

Democratizing Next-Gen Truck Hardware
By adopting gigacastings, structural battery packs, and 48-volt architectures, Ford is bringing technologies once reserved for expensive halo vehicles to a far lower price point. Even the cheapest trim of Tesla’s Cybertruck cost $59,990 at launch, and that price has since increased, while the top end nears six figures. Ford is applying similar manufacturing and technology gains to the $28,000 entry-level market.
As Ford prepares its Louisville line for 2027 production, scaling this architecture could accelerate the adoption of 48-volt aftermarket accessories and further popularize simplified manufacturing across the industry.
