Tesla app System Status for Powerwall

Tesla is rolling out a new "System Status" feature in the Tesla app that gives Powerwall owners AI-driven explanations for when and why their battery is charging or discharging.

According to Alex Guichet (@AlexGuichet), a mobile app engineer and designer at Tesla, the focus is transparency. "You’ll see exactly what your Powerwall is doing for your home and why," Guichet said on X. The view can also show forecasted times for state changes, such as discharging at 2:45 PM to avoid high peak-utility rates.

The "Autopilot" for Your Home

The Tesla app has long provided real-time power flow, solar production, and vehicle charging information, but the reasoning behind battery behavior4especially in Time-Based Control mode4could sometimes feel opaque.

The new status view aims to clarify that logic. Guichet compared it to one of Tesla s hallmark experiences: "While we were building it, I found myself saying that System Status is like watching the Autopilot visualization for your home." By swiping down on the Home Screen, users can access a Beta status card that explains current system priorities, such as storing excess solar ahead of expensive peak hours.

Because the explanations are generated by AI, the app includes thumbs-up and thumbs-down options for feedback. Guichet noted that "AI can make mistakes," and emphasized that offering a clear outlook for the next few hours was a key request from users.

Growing the Tesla Energy Ecosystem

This update arrives as Tesla Energy rolls out Powerwall 3 for residential storage, featuring a more integrated design and higher power output than its predecessor. The company is also working on backward compatibility so Powerwall 3 can operate alongside Powerwall 2 units.

Momentum continues globally as well: Tesla recently secured a major distribution deal in Australia and introduced Powerwall 3P for Europe s three-phase electrical grids. Whether the battery is used to go off-grid or to charge a Tesla vehicle from excess solar, having a clear "why" behind each kilowatt-hour helps make operation more understandable.

The new status feature is a server-side rollout, so an App Store update may not be required. It is being phased in, and if the Beta status card is not visible yet, it should appear on the home screen soon.
