Why I Bought a Charging Adapter for My 2024 Tesla Model Y

Living in California, I wanted more options when Tesla chargers were busy. Here’s how the OmniVolt has fit into my routine.

I bought my charging adapter because I was tired of changing my plans when Tesla chargers were busy.

I live in California and drive a 2024 Tesla Model Y. Most of the time, charging is straightforward. But when the location I want to use is occupied, I have to decide whether to wait or drive somewhere else.

That’s manageable, but it gets frustrating when I have other things to do. A charging stop becomes something I have to organize the rest of my day around.

What bothered me was seeing other charging stations at places I already visited and not having the adapter I needed to use them. I wanted to give myself more choices.

What made me order one

I wasn’t trying to replace Tesla charging. I wanted an alternative for those occasions when another station would be more convenient.

I chose the OmniVolt from Teslahubs because it combines CCS1 and J1772 connections in one adapter. Having both options in one unit appealed to me. I could keep it in the car and have it available when needed.

Delivery was surprisingly quick. I placed my order on Monday morning, and it arrived around lunchtime on Tuesday. I hadn’t expected to receive it that soon.

Getting it quickly was a nice start. But the reason I’m glad I bought it is what I can do with it now.

Walmart is the best example

Being able to charge at Walmart has been particularly useful for me.

At a location with a compatible charger, I can plug in and do my shopping while the car charges. I’m already going to spend time inside, so it’s convenient to get some charging done during that stop.

I don’t need to come back to a full battery for that to be worthwhile. If I’ve picked up what I need and added some charge in the meantime, that’s useful.

It also means shopping and charging don’t always have to be separate errands. I can sometimes take care of both in the same place instead of finishing at the store and then driving somewhere else to plug in.

That’s probably the clearest example of what I wanted from the adapter. Nothing dramatic, just a more convenient way to handle something I do regularly.

I still use Tesla chargers

If a Tesla charger is available and fits my plans, I’m happy to use it.

The difference comes when it’s busy. Now I can check compatible non-Tesla stations nearby instead of only looking for another Tesla location or deciding to wait.

Sometimes another charger is near a store I need to visit. Sometimes it’s simply a more convenient stop. Having access to those options makes it easier to choose around what I’m doing that day.

I still check compatibility, availability, and price. The adapter doesn’t mean I can use every station, and another charger won’t always be the better choice.

But it gives me more places to consider, which is exactly what I felt was missing before.

Was it worth it for me?

Yes, because it solved a problem I was actually having.

I don’t use the OmniVolt every time I charge. There are days when my usual charging routine works perfectly and I don’t need it. Then there are times when Tesla chargers are occupied, or I can charge somewhere I’m already stopping, and I’m glad it’s in the car.

For anyone considering an adapter, I think it helps to look at the charging stations around the places they actually go. Having compatible stations near regular shopping stops can make an adapter more useful than it might initially seem.

For me, the benefit has been practical: more choices when Tesla chargers are busy and the ability to charge during errands, including at Walmart.

I spend less time arranging my day around charging. That’s what I hoped to get out of the purchase, and that’s why I’m happy I bought it.
