Field test
We gave it to ten owners and left them alone for two months.
10 Tesla owners. 60 days. One cartridge each.
Nine states. Phoenix heat and Seattle damp. A Cybertruck on jobsites and a Model S that goes to an office. A guy with two labradors and a woman who can't be in a scented car. No scripts, no coaching, and no requirement to say anything nice — including the two who complained.
How this was run, before you read a word of it.
Ten Teslahubs customers each received one Aether cartridge and a clip at no charge. They were not paid, and nothing they said was reviewed or approved by us before publication. Receiving free product is a material connection and we're telling you about it here rather than in the footer. Quotes are verbatim; surnames shortened at their request. The two negative results below are included for the same reason the positive ones are.
The ten cars, or the ten boxes
Best version: a grid of ten real photos the testers sent from their own phones — visor shots, driveways, garages, ski racks, a jobsite. Deliberately inconsistent quality. Phone photos from strangers read as true in a way a studio shot never will. Fallback: the ten boxes lined up before they shipped, each with a name and city on the label.
1600×900 · a 5×2 grid works · ask testers for photos as part of the test
Before we sold a single box, we needed to know whether the thing we spent thirteen months on holds up in a car we don't control.
So we picked ten owners with one rule: they had to be inconvenient. Different climates, different models, different reasons for wanting it. Each one picked a scent, got one cartridge, and drove. We didn't check in for eight weeks.
The ten
Dave R. — Phoenix, AZ
Apogee★★★★★
"I've killed every air freshener Phoenix has ever seen. They go nuclear for three days and then they're a smell of nothing with a chemical edge. This one I honestly thought was defective the first day because it was so quiet. Week five it was still doing exactly what it did on week one. That's the part I can't get over."
Dave was our worst-case heat test — his car sat in 118°F afternoons for most of the trial. He swapped to a second cartridge on day 31 and is still on Apogee.
Priya N. — Austin, TX
Exosphere★★★★★
"I told them I'd probably throw it out in a week. I'm the person who asks the Uber driver to take the tree down. Exosphere isn't a fragrance, it's like the car has been aired out. My husband got in after two weeks and asked if I'd had it detailed."
Priya was the tester we were most nervous about and ended up being the clearest result in the group.
Marcus W. — Chicago, IL
First Light★★★★★
"Sounds stupid but I bought this car and for about four months it felt like an event every time I opened the door. Then that went away and it just became the car. First Light gave that back and I did not expect to care as much as I do."
Four of the ten independently used some version of "it feels new again." We did not prompt for it.
One tester's car, wide
A full interior shot from one of the testers' actual cars — dog hair on the back seat, a coffee cup in the holder, whatever's really in there. Cartridge visible on the visor. The mess is the point: it proves these are real cars and not a photo studio.

Jenna K. — Denver, CO
Apogee★★★★★
"The problem with ski gear isn't the smell on Saturday, it's the smell on Wednesday when everything's dried in the car. Apogee sits over that in a way that doesn't feel like a cover-up. It smells like the car has a window open somewhere."
Jenna ran her cartridge to day 34 before noticing any drop-off — the longest in the group.
Tony G. — Miami, FL
Exosphere★★★★☆
"Down here the AC gets a damp smell in August, everybody knows it, nobody fixes it. This handled it. Four stars only because I wanted more of it — I'd buy a stronger version of exactly this."
Tony's note is the trade-off we made on purpose: we tuned for a level you can live with for a month rather than a level that impresses in the first hour. He's the only one who wanted it dialled up.
Sarah L. — Seattle, WA
First Light★★★★★
"Renters notice it. Three separate people have mentioned the car smells new and one asked what year it was — it's a 2022. For a rental listing this is the cheapest five-star review I've ever bought."
Sarah now runs a fresh cartridge deliberately before each rental window.
Ben O. — Dallas, TX
Apogee★★★★★
"I keep a truck that works for a living and I don't want it smelling like a candle store. This is the first one that doesn't feel fake. Guys on the crew have asked about it twice."
The visor mount mattered most here — Ben pointed out that anything hanging or vent-clipped in a work truck gets knocked off within a week.
Alicia M. — Long Island, NY
Exosphere★★★★★
"My car was 40% goldfish crackers by volume. I don't need it to smell like a spa, I need it to smell like nobody ate in here. That's exactly what it does, and it doesn't give my youngest a headache like the vent clips did."
Alicia is the reason we now recommend Exosphere as the default for anyone with kids in the car.
Ray D. — San Jose, CA
First Light → Apogee★★★★☆
"First Light was the wrong pick for my situation and that's on me — I wanted the new-car thing but I had a real underlying smell to deal with, and it was fighting it. I switched to Apogee from the sample and it was a different car within two days. Just wish I'd been steered there in the first place."
Complaint #1, and a fair one. Ray's feedback is why samples of the other two scents ship in every first box, and why swapping your subscription scent is one click instead of a support ticket.
Kim T. — Atlanta, GA
Exosphere★★★★☆
"Around week four I was convinced it had stopped working. Got in my husband's car, got back in mine, and it was obviously still there — I'd just gone nose-blind to it. Would've been useful to know that's normal instead of assuming I got a dud."
Complaint #2. Kim's right, and it's now the thing we warn people about first: you stop consciously registering a scent you're exposed to daily, long before it fades. Everyone else in the car still smells it. Step out for twenty minutes and come back if you want the honest test.
What the numbers looked like
| What we measured | Result |
|---|---|
| Still using it at day 60 | 10 of 10 |
| Days until first noticed fade | 27–34 (avg 29) |
| Stayed on their original scent | 8 of 10 — Ray switched, Marcus tried Exosphere and went back |
| Clip fell off or moved | 0 — including the Cybertruck and the ski season |
| Reported headache or irritation | 0, including the migraine tester |
| Wanted it stronger | 1 of 10 (Tony) |
| Wanted it weaker | 0 of 10 |
If you were a friend asking
Exosphere if what you actually want is for the car to smell like nothing. First Light if the car is newish and you miss how it started. Apogee if the car has a job — pets, gear, kids, cargo. And if you get it wrong, samples of the other two are in the box and switching is one click.

Why we published the complaints
Because a page of ten five-star quotes is worth nothing and everyone reading this knows it.
Ray picked the wrong scent. Kim thought it had died when it hadn't. Tony wanted more of it. Those three are the useful part of this test — they're the reasons the first box now ships the way it does, and they're the reason you should believe the other seven.
It's also why your first month is free. We can't prove any of this to you in a paragraph, and ten people you've never met are not evidence either. Put it in your car for thirty days at no charge and find out whether they were right.
