Before buying any CCS adapter, open your car's screen: Controls → Software → Additional Vehicle Information → CCS Adapter Support.
If it says "Enabled," you're set — nearly all 2021-and-newer Teslas are. Earlier builds may need Tesla's one-time ECU retrofit via the Tesla app. J1772 Level 2 charging works on every Tesla, no check needed.
How to choose an adapter — six things that matter
An adapter looks like a simple piece of plastic. It isn't. During a 250 kW session it carries more power than an average American house uses in a day — through two contact points.
UL 2252 Listed — not "UL tested"
UL 2252 is the safety standard written specifically for EV charging adapters. "Listed" means the product line is certified with ongoing factory audits. Cheap adapters often advertise a one-time "UL test report" — a lab looked at one sample once.
Thick, pure copper
Heat comes from resistance, and resistance comes from thin or impure copper you can't see from outside. Thin copper runs hot, hot connectors deform, deformed connectors make worse contact — and run even hotter. That loop is how adapters melt.
A built-in thermal cutoff
Your Tesla's temperature sensor sits in the charge port, not in the adapter. The car protects itself; it can't protect a bad adapter. A quality adapter carries its own thermal cutoff that throttles before anything gets dangerous.
A real lock and IP67 sealing
Fast charging with a wiggling connector means arcing and pitted pins. Look for a positive lock with zero play and IP67 weatherproofing.
Cybertruck compatibility
Cybertruck's port is deeper than other models, and most CCS adapters — including Tesla's own and Lectron's — won't lock into it. Buy for it from day one if there's any chance.
A warranty the seller expects to honor
A one-year warranty on a device that should outlast your car says a lot about the manufacturer's confidence. Look for three years, free replacement, and seller-paid return shipping.

Two safety notes, whatever adapter you choose: never disconnect an adapter under load, and never use one that shows any damage or deformation. CCS1 adapters are rated to 500V — don't use them on stations rated above that.
The 2026 rule of thumb
The charging war is over and NACS won — but the map your Tesla drives on is still half CCS and J1772, and will be for years. The Supercharger network is more crowded than it's ever been, and the stations sitting empty next door are the ones your car can't use out of the box.
One properly certified adapter closes that gap for the life of the car. Keep it in the frunk. Hope you rarely need it. Be very glad it's there — and very glad it's not the cheap one — when you do.
