Tesla website code hints at monthly FSD subscriptions for Europe

Tesla owners in Europe have waited years for full access to Full Self-Driving (FSD). The software has been commonplace in North America, but European regulations have kept availability limited. A recent find in Tesla’s website source code indicates a more flexible payment option may be close.

Observers noticed commented-out code on the Tesla Netherlands website referencing a “Subscription Price Hook,” shared on X by @Tesla_NL_TR. The code suggests the site already contains infrastructure for a €99 per month subscription, pending activation via a server-side flag. While €99 could be a placeholder that aligns with the $99 monthly fee in the U.S., it signals that Tesla is preparing its backend for a European subscription rollout.

FSD in Europe: What’s the hold-up?

Tesla has worked for years to secure approval for FSD (Supervised) on European roads and outlined an ambitious plan to launch the system by February 2026. That timeline was linked to collaboration with the Dutch vehicle authority (RDW) as a pathway to broader European approval. Even so, FSD has not yet been approved by regulators in the Netherlands or elsewhere in the EU.

To showcase safety and generate interest, Tesla ran an FSD ride-along program last year in cities including Hamburg, Berlin, and Amsterdam, giving people in Europe firsthand exposure to the system’s progress. Elon Musk has suggested in recent weeks that the first formal approvals could come as soon as this month, but as the final week of February arrives there is still no official announcement.

One-time purchase vs. subscription

North America recently saw a major policy change: earlier this month, Tesla discontinued the option to purchase FSD as a one-time, $8,000 upgrade in the U.S. and Canada. For new owners there, access is now limited to a monthly subscription.

Europe still offers a one-time purchase for now, though precedent points to a phase-out. In Australia, where FSD subscriptions began last fall, Tesla has announced that the one-time purchase option will end on March 31. Once subscriptions launch in Europe, the “buy it once” option may also be retired quickly.

Looking ahead

The appearance of subscription hooks on the Netherlands site indicates Tesla can enable the offering as soon as regulators grant approval. For many drivers, a €99 monthly fee is easier to justify than a four-figure upfront payment, particularly while the feature remains in “supervised” mode.

As Tesla’s previously set February 2026 target date passes, more “leaks” like this may surface as the company prepares to bring its most advanced AI to highly regulated European roads.
