Tesla to Add Smart Charging to Wall Connectors
An upcoming feature in version 4.56.5 of the Tesla app points to a new "Low Cost Charging" configuration for the Wall Connector. The capability is designed to reduce charging costs by scheduling charging around local utility rates.
Automating Your Savings with Low Cost Charging
Many utilities offer rate plans where electricity is significantly cheaper at night or during off-peak hours. After selecting your utility and plan in the Tesla app, the system will automatically "Configure your charging preferences to optimize for the lowest cost energy based on your utility plan."

Tesla says the feature will be limited to "supported" Wall Connectors. A specific list is not yet published, but it is highly likely to include all Wi-Fi-connected Wall Connectors currently in the wild. By relying on software, the Wall Connector determines when to draw power to minimize cost. Owners on flat-rate plans could consider time-of-use plans to benefit from overnight discounts.
Enhanced Charge on Solar
The company is also introducing "Enhanced Charge on Solar" for households with Powerwall and solar. It combines charging from excess solar energy with the new low-cost logic. App strings state, "The Low Cost Charging mode uses your utility rate plan and excess solar to save you money."
In practice, the vehicle would prioritize charging from solar during the day, then use the cheapest available grid power at night. Another reference in the app notes, "Your Powerwall's Operational Mode controls how your home energy system functions. This includes smart vehicle charging features."
Expanding Wall Connector Utility
These updates build on the existing Wall Connector feature set. Current capabilities include access control that limits charging to specific vehicles via a VIN allow list or by brand (Tesla only or everyone). Wall Connectors also support independent schedules that are separate from those set in the vehicle or the main app menu.

Version 4.56.5 of the Tesla app also introduces new repair certificates for high-voltage batteries and assets for the upcoming Model S and X Signature Edition. The presence of "Low Cost Charging" in the code suggests a public rollout is approaching.
