Tesla’s Lost ‘Back to the Future’ Easter Egg: What It Did and Why It Disappeared

Tesla has built many pop‑culture nods into its products, but one of the most elaborate lived only in the mobile app. The Back to the Future Easter egg re-themed several parts of the prior Tesla app with callbacks to the 1985 film. The feature disappeared when the app was revamped in 2021.

How the Back to the Future Easter Egg Worked

Turning it on required patience: the vehicle needed to show exactly 121 miles or 121 km of range (not 121 miles converted to km).

Once the range was exactly 121 miles, tapping the battery icon in the Tesla app would trigger the sequence. You would be prompted with a dialog box that read “Time Circuits On,” and stated, “Ensure plutonium fuel is inserted into reactor chamber and press ‘Yes’ to continue.” Tapping Yes would then enable the Easter egg.

Features and References

All changes occurred only on the phone; nothing in the vehicle itself was altered. The vehicle’s name switched to OUTATIME (matching the DeLorean’s license plate), and 121 miles of range was shown as 1.21 GW, a nod to the power required for time travel in the movie.

“Charging scheduled” was replaced with “Time Circuits On,” the Charging section was renamed the “Fuel Chamber,” and it showed a current output of 300R. The app also moved the vehicle’s location to 1600 S Azusa Ave in Rowland Heights (a filming location) and displayed a service appointment dated November 5, 1955, the day Marty McFly travels to in the first film.

Why the Easter Egg Disappeared

Tesla released Tesla app version 4.0 in August 2021, one of the app’s biggest redesigns, replacing flat vehicle artwork with fully rendered 3D models and animated transitions. The Back to the Future Easter egg did not carry over to the new design and has remained unavailable since.

The Easter egg always displayed a Model X with the falcon‑wing doors open, so it wasn’t specific to your vehicle, and it didn’t change anything inside the vehicle. Those factors likely contributed to its removal.

Could Tesla Bring It Back?

There is currently no indication that Tesla plans to restore the Easter egg. However, nothing prevents the company from recreating it; if it returns, we’d probably see a more immersive version with a 3D‑modeled DeLorean and a matching 3D model inside the vehicle.

Tron Mode is available in the vehicle today. In 2024, Rivian added a temporary ‘Back to the Future’ mode in its Halloween update.

Tesla App Easter Eggs

The Tesla app still includes several Easter eggs. In July 2026, Rainbow Road began appearing in the Tesla app when the vehicle’s Rainbow Road setting is enabled, turning the app’s FSD path from blue into a moving rainbow.

Tesla recently added another one: on the app’s FSD Stats page, rapidly tapping the percentage graph five times changes the graph from blue to a rainbow effect on both iOS and Android.
