All Tesla models include an emergency (parking) brake, though it isn’t always obvious how to use it. The feature is handy when parking on a hill or steep incline, or as a backup in an emergency.
How to Enable Emergency Brake
If the vehicle has a physical gear stalk, press and hold the Park button at the end of the right stalk. When the emergency brake is engaged, the (P) or PARK icon appears on the vehicle’s screen.
If there is no gear stalk, enable the parking brake using the touchscreen by tapping and holding the Park icon at the top-left corner of the display.
Disable Emergency Brake
To release the emergency brake, simply shift into Drive or Reverse as normal; the parking brake is automatically disabled when you move the car.
Backup Gear Selector
On newer Teslas that lack a gear stalk, there is a backup method to select gears or enable the parking brake if the touchscreen is not functioning.
For a Model 3 or Model Y, press near the hazard lights button to enter the backup gear selection. From there you can change gears or press and hold the Park button to apply the parking brake.
For a Model S or Model X, press the area beneath the wireless phone chargers to change gears or enable the parking brake.
Emergency Braking While Driving
If the parking-brake control is pressed while the vehicle is moving, the car will apply its normal brakes and remove drive torque from the motor for as long as the button is held. The parking-brake mechanism itself will not engage unless the vehicle comes to a stop.
Here are two YouTube videos that demonstrate the feature.
