Tesla's New Grok Vehicle Commands in Action [VIDEO]

Tesla owners can now speak naturally to their cars with Grok instead of relying on rigid legacy voice commands for core functions like climate control.

The new Grok voice commands for vehicle functions are rolling out as part of the Summer Update, which was announced last week and began reaching customer cars over the weekend as software update 2026.26.

Hands-Free Vehicle Control Through Natural Speech

SpaceXAI’s Grok chatbot made its automotive debut last summer as a primarily screen-based conversational assistant. Tesla later added navigation commands, letting drivers configure and edit routes by talking to Grok. With location-based reminders introduced in software update 2026.14 earlier this spring, you could ask Grok to remind you to take your gym bag out of the trunk when you get home or buy milk on your way back.

The Summer Update greatly expands these capabilities, enabling Grok to manage core vehicle hardware and software. Drivers can place phone calls, search for and queue up music, open the glovebox, adjust the climate system, and more, using natural phrases.

In practice, the integration also handles complex, multi-part requests. For example, you can ask it to navigate to work, adjust the cabin climate, and change the Steering Weight setting from Light to Heavy at the same time, and the system processes all three without hesitation.

Beyond basic toggles, the assistant is expected to control seat heating and ventilation, and it can pull up specific menus on request. Saying, "Can you show me the Steering Weight in Settings?" instantly opens the corresponding Dynamics tab on the touchscreen. You can then follow up by asking it to interact with what’s on the screen, and the assistant does so.

Initiating a conversation with Grok is as simple as using the recently added "Hey Grok" wake word, while saying "goodbye" dismisses the assistant. With calls, media playback, and hardware controls added to Grok’s existing navigation and reminder features, the assistant now covers most of the average Tesla driver’s most-used voice commands.

Global Rollout and What’s Coming Next

Grok launched in the U.S. before expanding to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and select European and Asian countries. Alongside these new vehicle controls, the Summer Update also expands Grok availability across Europe and to additional Asian markets, including India, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. This new functionality will be available everywhere Grok is.

Deep integration with core vehicle systems lays the groundwork for upcoming features. Earlier this year, Elon Musk confirmed that Full Self-Driving integration for Grok is in development and later noted that Tesla owners will be able to control FSD by talking to Grok sometime this fall. As voice interaction evolves from rigid commands to conversational co‑piloting, hands‑free control of driving modes and cabin settings—and eventually FSD—will become second nature.
