For years, analysts have looked to the Nordic countries as a primary gauge of Tesla’s performance in Europe. After recent declines in several nations, Tesla is now seeing a solid rebound across the continent, even as registrations dropped in Norway and Spain.
Registration Data
New April registration figures compiled by Reuters show sharp gains: up 111% in Sweden, 102% in Denmark, 112% in France, and 23% in the Netherlands.
Meanwhile, some historically strong markets declined in April, including Spain (-47%) and Norway (-61%).
| Country | April Registrations |
|---|---|
| Denmark | +102% |
| France | +112% |
| Italy | -5% |
| Netherlands | +23% |
| Norway | -61% |
| Portugal | -33% |
| Spain | -47% |
| Sweden | +111% |
Beyond the Nordic Saturation Point
Norway, a global leader in electric vehicle adoption thanks to more than a decade of incentives for zero-emission transport, is showing signs of market saturation.
Lower deliveries in Norway do not necessarily indicate weaker brand loyalty or a sudden win for legacy automakers. Instead, they reflect a flattening adoption curve in a market where much of the driving population has already switched to electric vehicles.
With the Nordics effectively at their EV ceiling, those delivery figures are no longer the best indicator of Tesla’s European momentum. The volume focus has shifted farther south.
The Giga Berlin Advantage
The rebound is being powered by large-population markets with strong loyalty to domestic brands, notably Germany, France, and the United Kingdom. Offsetting declines in the Nordic region and Spain depends on localized production capacity at Giga Berlin.
Manufacturing the Model Y within the European Union helps avoid shipping volatility and import tariffs.
Similar to the introduction of the highly affordable Model 3 Premium RWD in the Canadian market, the company is leveraging manufacturing margins to undercut legacy European automakers on their home turf. Giga Berlin enables faster, lower-cost deliveries than domestic legacy brands that are scaling costly EV programs.
European FSD
With a planned international expansion of FSD v14 Lite for Hardware 3 vehicles and a successful deployment in the Netherlands, FSD is positioned to become a selling point.
Every Model 3 and Model Y delivered in Germany or France contributes localized driving telemetry, helping speed the path to regulatory approval for supervised autonomy in the European Union as countries like Belgium look to fast-track approvals. With additional countries expressing interest, FSD may not be far from availability in other major markets.
