Tesla’s Austin Cybercab Fleet Tops 300; Dallas Launch Up Next

The official Robotaxi account on X announced that Tesla now has 300+ Cybercabs serving Austin one month after launch, describing it as an 8x increase in 30 days.

Tesla VP of AI Ashok Elluswamy, marking two years since the WeRobot event where the Cybercab debuted, noted on X that the cabs are now widespread in Austin and said Dallas is next.

Austin Fleet Surpasses 300

Tesla started with somewhere around 38 Cybercabs when public rides began in Austin last month; surpassing 300 now amounts to roughly an 8x increase. Independent fleet tracking based on Texas registration data showed around 169 Cybercabs in Austin earlier this month, after Tesla added 111 in just a couple of weeks. Tesla’s latest figure indicates the fleet is larger than those counts and sufficiently scaled to begin looking at additional markets.

Austin remains the only city where riders can hail a steering wheel-less Cybercab, alongside unsupervised Model Y robotaxis across its 246 sq. mile service area.

Dallas Set To Offer Cybercab Rides Next

Elluswamy did not share a launch date, only that Dallas is next on Tesla’s list. Dallas is one of Tesla’s seven active Robotaxi markets, with a 31 sq. mile service area centered on Downtown Dallas. It extends north through Oak Lawn, Highland Park, University Park and Bluffview, bordering Dallas Love Field to the west and Lower Greenville to the east. Tesla already runs fully unsupervised Model Y rides in the city.

The focus on Dallas is a bit of a surprise given recent sightings of nearly 200 Cybercabs at Tesla’s Houston lot, which suggested Houston could be the next Cybercab city. Houston and Miami, where a large Cybercab nest has also been spotted, could still follow soon after Dallas, as could any of Tesla’s other active Robotaxi markets.

NHTSA Probe Still Looming

The expansion is proceeding while federal regulators continue investigating the Cybercab. Tesla recently received a 30-day extension from NHTSA, giving it until October 30 to answer 21 questions about how it certified the steering wheel-less vehicle and its plans to scale commercial operations. It remains unclear what impact the probe will have on Tesla’s rollout.

For now, Tesla appears to be moving ahead. With more than 300 Cybercabs in Austin and fleets building up in other Texas cities, Dallas riders could be hailing Cybercabs before the end of the year.
