Tesla Rolls Out Free First Robotaxi Ride in Houston and Dallas
Tesla is offering a complimentary first Robotaxi trip to new users. As spotted by Ethan McKanna (@ethanmckanna) on X, the Robotaxi app’s booking screen now displays “First ride on us,” with a $0.00 fare for first-time riders.

Where the Promotion Is Live
According to McKanna’s testing, free first rides are currently available in Houston and Dallas. Houston recently received a rocket-shaped geofence expansion that grew its service area almost 10 times, from about 25 to 254 square miles.

The promotion does not appear to be live in Austin, which is currently the only market with Cybercabs. Tesla runs Robotaxi in seven markets, with fully autonomous rides in six of them. There is no word yet on whether the free ride includes any terms and conditions or whether it will expand to other cities.
How Robotaxi Pricing Has Changed
Robotaxi fares have been adjusted several times since launching in Austin last summer:
- June 2025: Robotaxi launched with a flat $4.20 fare per ride and no surge multipliers.
- Mid-July 2025: The flat rate rose to $6.90 as the service area expanded into downtown Austin and the University of Texas campus.
- Late July 2025: Tesla switched to dynamic, distance-based pricing, with a $1.00 base fare plus $1.00 per mile.
- March 2026: Tesla raised fares to a $3.00 base plus $1.40 per mile as the fleet grew.
- September 2026: Cybercab rides opened to the public in Austin, running roughly 35% cheaper than Model Y robotaxis on the same routes.

Building Ridership
A free first ride is a straightforward way to encourage trials, especially in markets that have just expanded. Tesla has named Las Vegas, Phoenix, Jacksonville, and San Antonio as its next Robotaxi markets.
During Tesla’s Q3 2026 earnings call, Elon Musk said he expects Robotaxi to start making a noticeable difference to Tesla’s finances around Q2 2027 and to become a big deal by Q3 or Q4 next year. That is also when Tesla expects to let owners add their own vehicles to the Robotaxi network once unsupervised FSD rolls out.
With Cybercab rides set to launch in Dallas next month, free first rides there could attract many new riders interested in trying Tesla’s purpose-built robotaxi.
