Tesla is rolling out a significant upgrade for existing energy customers that doesnt require new wiring or hardware replacements. In an update to its official support pages, the company announced that "Backwards Compatibility" is coming to Powerwall 3, enabling it to operate alongside Powerwall 2.

The feature is initially available only in Australia. Australia is one of Tesla's largest energy markets alongside North America.

Expanding Your Home Ecosystem

Previously, upgrading to the latest home battery meant it couldnt communicate with the prior generation. Powerwall 3 is the newest residential storage system, delivering 11.5 kW of continuous power and integrating a solar inverter that supports up to six solar inputs.

According to Tesla, "A software update is coming soon that will include a new feature in which Powerwall 3 will be compatible with Powerwall 2. Owners with an existing Powerwall 2 can add a Powerwall 3 to expand storage without replacing their current setup, improving energy independence and savings.

At launch, supported configurations will include up to four Powerwall 2 units, one Powerwall 3 unit, and up to three Powerwall 3 Expansion units. For three-phase grid connections, Powerwall 3 output will be limited to 5 kW.

Why Australia First?

The timing of the announcement follows a major Powerwall distribution deal recently secured in Australia to expand the company's energy footprint. The region has become a major hub for Tesla Energy and has frequently posted record sales growth.

Tesla's ability to add "Backwards Compatibility" long after units have been installed highlights its over-the-air update infrastructure. By treating home batteries like smartphones or EVs, the company can roll out complex features that change how a home manages power without a technician visiting the property for a "software install."

European customers recently saw the launch of the three-phase Powerwall 3P, but there is no official word yet on when that hardware or the new backwards compatibility feature will be available in other regions.

A Win for Energy Independence

Powerwall 2 units retain their original warranty when paired with the new hardware, and Powerwall 3 units include a 10-year warranty.

In Australia, a Virtual Visa Reward Card offer of up to $1,500 AUD is available for orders placed by March 31, 2026.
