Tesla Owner Builds Custom 'Supercharger' at Home

Tesla’s Supercharging network is a massive operation, currently boasting more than 75,000 charging stalls worldwide. From the world’s largest installation with 168 stalls in California to the more common urban hubs, the network is ever-growing. However, one Tesla owner has managed to install a Supercharger right at home — but there’s a catch.
X user @NestorLRamos, who created this self-made home “Supercharger,” shared images of a setup that looks identical to a public stall. Despite the professional appearance, it isn’t actually a DC fast charger. Instead, Ramos obtained a Supercharger body and installed a standard Level 2 charger inside.
“It’s actually a Level-2 charger inside a Tesla shell. I’m charging at 11.5 kWh.”
For context, a standard Tesla Wall Connector or Mobile Connector typically provides this level of power for daily residential use. While a real Supercharger would deliver much higher speeds, using one at home daily could degrade the vehicle’s battery over the years. However, there have been owners who solely Supercharge their vehicles without any ill effects.
The project’s ingenuity has the Tesla community on X asking how to find a similar Supercharger body. While Tesla has replaced the body of the newer v4 Superchargers, the v2 and v3 bodies are iconic.
Supercharger shells get replaced as needed, whether due to damage or because a site was upgraded to v4. Given the extent of damage some public stations have sustained, a shell might have been salvaged from one being decommissioned or discarded.
This is one Supercharger you won’t see advertised on highway signage. Tesla normally reserves these iconic white-and-red shells for its high-speed public stations, while selling white-label Superchargers to businesses that they can brand themselves.
While it is just a decorative shell for a standard charger, the aesthetic upgrade is undeniable. It looks like a legitimate Supercharger sitting right in a driveway.
What do you think of this DIY home charging setup? Would you prefer a Supercharger shell for your garage, or are you happy with the standard Wall Connector?
