A new report from CleanTechnica shows the Tesla Model Y was the world’s top-selling electric vehicle in May 2026. The dataset covers both plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles; overall plug-in demand grew 15% year over year, and battery electrics accounted for 71% of global plug-in sales.
Model Y Sitting Pretty at the Top
Tesla recorded 93,571 Model Y registrations in May, a 16% increase compared with the same month last year. Interest in the all-electric crossover has rebounded, helped by more affordable Standard RWD and AWD trims and the newly introduced three-row, six-seat Model Y L, which just became available to order in the U.S. this week.
The Model Y’s run of strong results builds on a milestone when it became the world’s best-selling vehicle in 2023, a title it narrowly missed in 2024 but regained last year. From January through May, the crossover accumulated 408,158 registrations—more than double the total of the second-place Geely Xingyuan.

Legacy Names Lose the Chart Battle
The May rankings underscore how difficult it has been for traditional automakers from the U.S., Europe, and Japan to break into the global EV top tier. Not a single legacy brand appeared in the top 20 for the month. Instead, the leaderboard featured Tesla alongside rapidly expanding Chinese manufacturers such as Geely, BYD, and Leapmotor. The highest-placed legacy model, which still fell short of the top 20, was the Toyota bZ4X with 11,119 units sold.
Tesla’s sedan also advanced. The Model 3 climbed to third place in May with 44,237 registrations, up 28% year over year. It gained ground on the fourth-place BYD Song, though maintaining that podium position could be challenging as BYD prepares to scale its next-generation SUV lineup.
June numbers are still being compiled, but the month has historically been a delivery peak for Tesla. Tesla recently announced it tore through Q2 2026 delivery estimates, moving 480,126 vehicles globally over the quarter. With that total in the books, the gap between Tesla and the rest of the field is expected to widen when the June charts are published.
