Tesla Model Y Named Best Electric Vehicle of 2026 by Consumer Reports

Consumer Reports named the Model Y, the world’s best-selling vehicle, its Top Pick for electric vehicles in its 2026 rankings. The list is dominated by the resurgence of hybrid vehicles, and the Model Y is the only fully electric vehicle (BEV) to appear among the ten selections.

This recognition follows last year’s full-blown refresh of the Model Y, which targeted ride quality, cabin quietness, and interior materials and appears to have addressed long-standing critiques of the original Model Y.

Lone Electric Survivor

For the first time in Consumer Reports' history, all 10 choices for 2026 are electrified — meaning they are available as either hybrids or fully electric vehicles. The Model Y is the sole model available in pure battery-electric form.

The other nine spots were occupied by hybrids and plug-in hybrids, reflecting a broader industry trend in which legacy automakers are relying on gas-electric powertrains to bridge the gap for consumers. Competitors such as the Ford F-150 (Full-size pickup), Toyota Camry (Midsize Car), and Toyota Grand Highlander (Midsize SUV) relied on their hybrid variants to secure places on the list.

Why the Model Y Won

Consumer Reports noted the list includes industry-standard safety features such as Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) and pedestrian detection. The Model Y's selection underscores its maturity in Tesla's product cycle.

The 2026 rankings placed substantial weight on reliability, road-test performance, and owner satisfaction. The 2026 model-year refresh for the Model Y introduced frequency-dependent dampers for smoother suspension, acoustic glass for a quieter cabin, and a modernized interior with new lighting, among other changes.

Those updates, combined with under-the-frunk changes to the gigacasting that added stiffness, directly addressed long-standing customer complaints about a stiff ride and wind noise.
