Tesla Introduces Two-Tiers of Cleaning Fees for Robotaxi Rides
Tesla has rolled out a new cleaning fee policy for its Robotaxi service aimed at maintaining vehicle cleanliness as utilization increases. This policy, revealed by Sawyer Merrit, establishes a two-tiered charging structure to penalize riders who leave vehicles in unsatisfactory condition.
The new system supersedes the previous approach, which involved direct communication with riders concerning cleaning fees, offering a standardized procedure for basic cleaning instead.
Fee Structure
Tesla's updated support documentation now features two distinct tiers for cleaning fees.
- The first fee is set at $50, applicable for moderate messes such as food spills, significant dirt, and minor stains—essentially messes that could be considered preventable.
- The second fee amounts to $150, covering severe messes, which Tesla defines as involving biowaste or smoking inside the vehicle, as well as other severe conditions.
How It Works
Tesla aims to ensure a clean and comfortable experience for all riders, maintaining vehicle cleanliness. If a vehicle requires additional cleaning post-trip, a notification process is in place to inform riders.
An assessment will be conducted to evaluate the type and severity of the mess. Afterward, riders will receive a notification that indicates a cleaning fee has been applied for the trip.
A revised ride receipt displaying the additional fee will appear in the Ride History section of the Robotaxi app. This updated receipt will reflect the cleaning fee charges.
While Tesla is already working toward automating the cleaning process with the Cybercab, the current Model Y robotaxis are likely cleaned manually.

Dispute Process
Notably, the process for disputing cleaning fees is managed via a phone call rather than through an in-app message or button. Users who believe a charge is incorrect are advised to contact the Tesla Robotaxi Support Team for resolution.
