Tesla is expanding its proprietary Immersive Audio X processing to Model 3 and Model Y Long Range and Performance trims in China via an over-the-air software update, adding a simulated 3D listening experience using the existing speakers.
According to Sina Finance, the feature is included in software update 2026.14.11 (and later). On the vehicle display it appears as Immersive Audio X, a software-based algorithm that enhances the system’s acoustic staging.
How Immersive Audio X Works
Despite the name suggesting a discrete spatial audio format like Dolby Atmos, this is an advanced software filter. Audio in the vehicle is handled as two-channel stereo rather than discrete multi-channel tracks, so something like Dolby Atmos won’t work. Instead, the system likely applies sound extraction to separate direct and ambient elements, creating a 3D effect.
Lead vocals and primary instruments are emphasized up front, while ambient cues, reverb, and supporting instruments are steered to side and rear channels, forming a 360° virtual soundstage that can revitalize thin stereo mixes.
Drivers can adjust the effect with an immersion slider on the center display, scaling the virtual acoustic space to taste. In Auto mode, the system dynamically tunes immersion based on content such as dialogue, acoustic music, or electronic tracks.
Eligible Trims and Hardware Requirements
Previously, Immersive Audio X was exclusive to the Model Y L, where it first debuted earlier this spring. The latest rollout in China expands support to several dual-motor trims:
- Model 3 Long Range (now known as “Premium” in most markets) AWD and Model 3 Performance with a manufacturing date of September 2023 or later.
- Model Y Long Range (now known as “Premium” in most markets) AWD, Model Y L, and Model Y Performance with a manufacturing date of February 2025 or later.
Lower-end trims in China—including the base Model 3, Model 3 Long Range RWD, entry-level Model Y, and Model Y Long Range RWD—are not included in this rollout. A likely reason is fewer speakers in these variants; the more premium dual-motor setups may provide the channel separation needed for a clean upmix.
Will Other Regions and Features Follow?
The Model Y L continues to serve as a platform for next-generation in-cabin features. Beyond audio, it offers a seat-specific “Hey Grok” wake word system that identifies which occupant is speaking and tailors responses accordingly. Whether this directional voice feature will extend to the rest of the lineup or remain tied to the three-row, six-seat Model Y L’s microphone array is uncertain.
Because dual-motor Model 3 and Model Y trims in North America and Europe share the exact same speaker configurations as their Chinese counterparts, it is reasonable to expect Immersive Audio X to reach additional markets. Tesla is also preparing to kick off the first Model Y L deliveries in the U.S. this month, so broader Immersive Audio X deployments could arrive with upcoming international software branches.
