Judge Dismisses Odometer Class-Action Lawsuit Against Tesla

A class-action lawsuit alleging that Tesla intentionally manipulated vehicle odometers to cause early expiration of customer warranties has been dismissed.
The US District Court for the Central District of California dismissed the case of Nyree Hinton v. Tesla, Inc., which sought to include over a million California Tesla owners. The court docket is available at courtlistener.com.
Allegations in the case
Filed in April 2025, the complaint asserted that the odometer on Hinton’s used 2020 Model Y increased faster than the actual miles driven.
According to the filing, instead of recording physical distance traveled, Tesla used a concealed algorithm linking the odometer to energy consumption, driver behavior, and predictive metrics. The suit claimed the vehicle added up to 72 miles per day for a commute that was 20 miles at most.
The plaintiff further alleged that this design depleted the 50,000-mile Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty more quickly, and that the premature expiration left him responsible for a $10,000 suspension repair bill.
Response and proceedings
The filing drew widespread online attention, and many observers questioned the assertions. Third-party API tracking platforms that record GPS coordinates and mileage for thousands of vehicles globally reported no fleet-wide odometer discrepancies. Manipulating an odometer is also a serious offense under state and federal law.
Elon Musk dismissed the allegations shortly after the case drew attention.

Tesla’s legal team denied the allegations, moved the case to federal court, and filed a motion to dismiss.
Court dismissal
Following a recent hearing, the district judge granted Tesla’s motion to dismiss, ending the effort to proceed as a statewide class action.
The decision closes the case and halts further pursuit of allegations of a systemic practice to deprive owners of warranty coverage.
