Elon Musk: FSD 10x Parameter Upgrade Now Coming With v15

Tesla is advancing its autonomous driving software rapidly, but the next major architectural jump is being reserved for a later release. While the newly released FSD v14.3 is already earning praise for its smoothness, Elon Musk confirmed that the highly anticipated "10x parameter" model will not arrive until version 15.

The update came via X, where Musk explained the delay: "Our rate of advancement with the small model has been so fast that the large model has not yet caught up. V15 will be the large model," he stated. This indicates that although v14.3 represents a solid improvement, it still runs on a refined version of Tesla's "small" model with approximately one billion parameters.

Refined Performance in v14.3

Even without the 10-billion-parameter upgrade, FSD v14.3 is substantial. It includes a completely rewritten AI compiler and runtime, 20% faster vehicle reaction times, and other enhancements. Early public drives have already shown increased confidence and smoother behavior, especially at complex intersections and during parking lot maneuvers.

Tesla's team appears to have extracted enough performance from the current one-billion-parameter model that it outperforms early builds of the larger model. By staying with this optimized architecture for now, Tesla can deliver immediate safety and smoothness improvements while the "big brain" version continues training in the background.

What to Expect from the 10x Upgrade

The move to v15 will be a major architectural shift. A 10-billion-parameter model will allow the neural network to process and understand far more nuanced information. For comparison, Nvidia's competing Alpamayo 1.5 system already leverages 10 billion parameters, so Tesla is aiming to reclaim the technical lead.

The 10x model is expected to bring a substantial reduction in data loss due to video compression, enabling more human-like decision-making. Tesla originally planned to debut this larger model last year, but rapid improvements in the smaller model made continued iteration on v14 more efficient. By skipping the previously discussed "4x model" entirely, Tesla plans to jump straight to its most powerful build once v15 is ready.

AI5

It is unclear what is causing the delay of the 10-billion-parameter version of FSD, though many hope it is not related to memory constraints on current AI4 hardware. Musk did not indicate whether FSD v15 would launch this year or whether it would require AI5. Given the delay of FSD v14.3, which was originally scheduled for last year, it is likely that FSD v15 will not appear until late in the year at the earliest.

Looking Toward FSD v15

There is no official release date for FSD v15, and it is also unknown how many point releases will land on the v14 branch before the transition. As v14.3 continues its public rollout, Musk is expected to share more details about the capabilities of the "large model".

For now, the emphasis remains on the "small" model's rapid progress. Tesla has demonstrated it can achieve more with fewer parameters, but v15 is positioned as a turning point that could advance FSD from a "supervised" assistant to a truly driverless peer. Watch for comments from Musk, Ashok Elluswamy, and other Tesla executives to learn when the 10x leap begins internal testing.
