The Morning I Noticed Orange Through the Spokes

Late February, six months into owning the car. I had washed it the day before, wheels included, and I was walking past the front fender with coffee when the light caught something through the spokes. Orange. Not dust. Rust.
I crouched down. All four. One part of my six-month-old Tesla looked ten years old, and it sat in the exact spot every person who walks past a car looks first.
I did what everyone does. I searched it. I found the same three answers on every forum: it's the road salt, it's the cheap car wash, it's normal, ignore it.
All three are wrong in the way that matters. The salt was not the cause. The car wash had nothing to do with it. And "normal" is not an explanation, it is a shrug.
What I found instead explains why it happens to every standard Tesla, why it starts inside the first year, and why the fix that finally worked is the one nobody at the service center will bring up. I urge you to read to the end before you buy paint.
It Isn't the Salt. Salt Only Speeds Up What the Part Was Already Doing

Here is the part nobody says plainly. Standard Tesla calipers are unpainted cast iron. Not coated, not plated, not sealed. Raw iron, bolted to the wheel hub, out in the open.
Cast iron does one thing when it meets water and air: it oxidizes. Think of a cast-iron skillet left wet in the sink overnight. That skillet is your caliper, every rainy day, all year.
Then the car adds its own accelerants. Brake dust is mostly iron particles ground off the rotor and pad. It settles on the caliper, holds moisture against the metal, and rusts right alongside it. That is the gray-brown film that turns orange.
Then heat. Every hard stop takes the caliper to a few hundred degrees. Every drive home lets it cool to whatever the weather is. Heat cycling cracks any thin skin of oxide that might have protected the iron, and the next rain starts fresh underneath.
Salt is the last ingredient, not the first. Salt water is an electrolyte, so it makes the same reaction run faster. In Arizona this takes a couple of years. In the salt belt it takes one winter. Same iron, same result, different clock.
So no. Your car wash did not do this. Your detailer did not miss a step. Nothing was skipped at delivery. Rust on a standard Tesla caliper is not a defect. It is the finish. Why Nobody at the Service Center Will Bring It Up

I asked at my next service visit. The answer was polite and complete: "That's normal." It is. That is the whole problem.
A service center is organized around what is broken. A rusty caliper is not broken. It clamps the rotor exactly as hard rusty as it did clean. There is no line item, no software update, no repair code for "looks ten years old."
The only official answer to red calipers is the trim above yours. That answer costs thousands, and it only exists at order time. Nobody is going to offer you a $150 version of it across the service desk, because there is no $150 version on their menu.
So "that's normal" is true and useless at the same time. It tells you the rust is expected. It does not tell you that you have to live with it.
New Wheels Made It Worse, Not Better

My first fix was wheels. Gloss black, wider spokes, the set I had wanted since delivery. They looked incredible for about a day.
Then I noticed what wider spokes actually do. They open a bigger window onto the caliper. A rusty caliper in a nicer frame is a rustier caliper. The eye goes straight to the one thing that does not match.
That is the trap with every upgrade around the brakes. Every dollar you spend near the caliper points more eyes at it. Wheels, lowering, ceramic coat on the paint. All of it sharpens the contrast with the one bare-iron part in the middle.
Fix the caliper first. Then the wheels get to be the story.
The Three Fixes That Fail, and the Exact Reason Each One Fails

I tried to talk myself into each of these. Here is why I did not, mechanism by mechanism.
- A caliper is a hot part that flexes. Paint is a film on top of it. Films crack at the edges under heat cycling, and once there is a chip, water gets under the paint and rust lifts it from below.
- Done properly, wheels off, degreased, masked, high-temp paint, real cure time, a shop job for four corners runs from a few hundred dollars to well over a thousand depending on who does it. Done the rattle-can way, it looks like a rattle-can job forever, with overspray on the rotor hat and drips on the lower edge.
- One owner in the caliper threads put it best: "I painted my calipers when I first got my Model Y. Then repainted them a year later." That is the paint cycle. And it is permanent. Undoing a bad paint job means stripping the caliper, and a bad paint job is a real negotiating point when you sell or return a lease.
Fix 2 and Fix 3 Both Die the Same Way: Heat Beats Glue

Fix 2: vinyl decals. Cheap, and they look fine in the listing photo. Then the caliper hits operating temperature, the adhesive softens, and the edges lift. Weeks, not years. Now you have a peeling sticker on the most visible part of your car, on top of the rust it was hiding.
Fix 3: covers that glue on, or covers made of plastic. Same failure, bigger consequences. A glue bond on a part that cycles from freezing to a few hundred degrees is a bond on a timer. Search any owner forum for "caliper cover came off" and read what was holding it on. It was adhesive. Plastic adds a second problem: it warps and discolors next to brake heat.
And the "universal" versions get shimmed and forced onto a caliper shape they were never cut for. An owner in the install threads described one of those kits as "easier to put an owl on a globe than these covers on the calipers." Gaps, rattles, uneven clamping.
So the requirements wrote themselves. Nothing painted. Nothing glued in the load path. Nothing plastic. Cut for my exact caliper. And it has to come back off.
The Fix: Put Something Between the Salt and the Iron That Isn't Glued On

What finally worked is almost boring once you see it. A vented aluminum shell, cut to the shape of your caliper, that clamps to the caliper body mechanically. Stainless clips, screws, and threadlocker on the threads so heat cycling cannot back them out.
That is the whole mechanism, and every piece of it answers one of the failures above.
- Aluminum, not plastic clips. Aluminum takes brake heat without warping or discoloring, and it does not rust the way the cast iron under it does. The powder-coat finish is on aluminum, not on a part that flexes under braking, so it is not living the paint cycle.
- Mechanical clamp, zero adhesive in the load path. The clips grip the caliper body. Threadlocker holds the screws. Nothing is asking glue to survive a few hundred degrees.
- Vented. The slots let heat leave instead of trapping it against the caliper.
- No drilling, brake system untouched. Nothing touches the hydraulics, the pads, or the rotor. As one owner asked in the threads: "Have you ever seen a caliper cover damage a braking system? I bet no."
- Cut per model, not universal. Seven fitments: Model Y, Model 3, Model Y Juniper from 2025, Model Y Berlin, Model 3 Highland, Model S/X 2018-2022, and Model S/X 2023-2025.
- Reversible. Unclip it and the car is stock again. That matters on a lease, at resale, and at your next brake-pad change.
