Before you book the paint shop

Before You Pay $500 to Paint Your Tesla's Calipers, Read the 5 Mistakes Owners Regret, and the $149.99 Bolt-On That Skips All of Them.

Painting means wheels off, masking, days without the car, and edges that chip. A powder-coated aluminum shell gives you the same color through the spokes in one driveway session, for less than the shop quote.

What a Caliper Paint Job Actually Costs You

A proper job is not a spray and go. The wheels come off, the caliper gets degreased and masked, the brake hardware gets protected, high-temperature paint goes on in coats, and it has to cure. Put a price on that and you are at $500 or more and roughly three days without the car.

The cheaper route is a brush kit or a rattle can in your garage. It saves the money and costs you a weekend, and the result usually looks like a garage job: overspray on the rotor hat, drips on the lower edge, uneven coverage in the casting lines.

And both routes share the same problem: paint is permanent, and it chips.

The Five Mistakes That Make Owners Regret Painting

Mistake 1

Painting a hot part

Calipers heat up on every stop and cool on every drive home. A thin paint film on a part that cycles like that cracks at the edges first.

Mistake 2

Painting over iron

Once it chips, water gets under the film and the iron underneath rusts, lifting the paint from below. Orange shows through red.

Mistake 3

Thinking you can undo it

You cannot peel paint off a caliper. Going back to stock means stripping it, which matters on a lease return or at resale.

Mistake 4

Paying for downtime

Days without the car for a color change you could have in a lunch break.

Mistake 5

Trusting painted covers

A buyer of another brand's painted covers: "very happy for about 4 months ... and then the paint started peeling off them."

The Alternative: The Color Goes on a Separate Aluminum Shell, Not on Your Caliper

You get the painted-caliper look without putting a drop of paint on the car.

  • Aluminum shell, powder-coated. Aluminum does not rust, and brake heat does not warp it the way it warps plastic.
  • 304 stainless steel clips and screws. Mechanically clamped to the caliper body. Zero glue holding it on.
  • Cut per model. Seven fitments, from the 2017 Model 3 to the 2025 Juniper and Model S/X.
  • No drilling, no modifications. Pads, rotor and brake lines are never touched.
  • Reversible. Unscrew it and the car is stock again, for a lease return or a sale.
  • Everything in the box. Four covers, clips, screws, Loctite, tools and a video install guide.

The covers cost less than the shop quote, take a lunch break instead of three days, and come back off. That is the whole argument.

The Whole Job, Start to Finish

  1. Wheel off. Jack one corner and pull the wheel. The caliper is right there.
  2. Hook the shell on. It is cut for your model, so it only seats one way.
  3. Clip and screw. Stainless clip behind the caliper, a drop of the included Loctite, tighten with the included tool.
  4. Wheel back on. Torque the lugs, next corner. Four corners, about 30 minutes, with the video guide open on your phone.

The Only Way to Get This Wrong Is to Pick the Wrong Car. Here Is How Not To.

Read our 1-star reviews and they say the same thing: the covers did not fit the car they went on. Every one of them is about fit, so here is the ten-second check that prevents it.

Straight Answers Before You Order

Will they look like a cheap cover?

The shell is cut to your caliper's shape, so it sits tight instead of floating on a universal outline. One reviewer called them "a fabulous upgrade to the car. They look amazing."

Can I paint later if I change my mind?

Yes. Unscrew the covers and the caliper is exactly as the factory left it.

Why not the cheaper set on Amazon?

Check three things on any set: what it is made of (plastic or painted metal, or powder-coated aluminum), how it holds on (glue, or stainless clips and screws), and whether it is cut for your exact caliper or sold as universal. Ours is aluminum, clipped, cut per model, and backed by a lifetime defect warranty. If a cheaper set passes all three, buy that one.

Will they fly off at highway speed?

They are held by 304 stainless steel clips and screws, with Loctite on the threads, not by glue. Adhesive is what fails on cheap covers when the brake gets hot. Ours has none holding it on.

Do they change how the car brakes?

No. The shell sits over the outside of the stock caliper. Nothing touches the pads, the rotor or the brake lines. The stock caliper does all the braking, exactly as before.

What about brake heat?

The shell is aluminum alloy, not plastic, so brake heat does not warp it. It is powder-coated aluminum, not paint on a hot iron part.

Can I take them off when I sell or return a lease?

Yes. Undo the screws, unhook the shell, and the caliper is exactly as the factory left it. That is the whole difference from paint.

What if they do not fit?

Every set is covered by the 30-Day Perfect Fit Guarantee and our 30-day return window, plus a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects. Pick your car with the check above and email hello@teslahubs.com if you are unsure.
