Tesla has officially confirmed the launch of Powerwall 3P in Germany, a new version of its Powerwall home backup battery built for Europe’s three-phase electrical grids. The company has opened a sign-up page for the product, with the launch planned for the near future.
Although the standard Powerwall 3 and the legacy Powerwall 2 are available in select European markets, Powerwall 3P tackles a key infrastructure difference between North America and Europe: the widespread use of three-phase power in residential homes.
The Phase Problem
In North America, most homes use single-phase service. A single Powerwall can back up an entire home because all circuits are on the same phase (or on a 120V/240V split-phase).
In Germany and much of Europe, however, three-phase power is typical for residences, enabling heavy loads such as induction cooktops, heat pumps, and EV chargers to run more efficiently.
Up to now, installing a Powerwall in a three-phase home required compromises. Because the standard Powerwall is a single-phase device, it ties into only one of the three phases—L1, L2, or L3—creating two problems.
First, phase imbalance: grid operators often tightly restrict how much power can be drawn or exported on a single phase if the other two phases are idle. A Powerwall on L1 can reach those regulatory limits well before hitting its own hardware limits.
Second, power imbalance: during an outage, a single-phase Powerwall can back up only the circuits on its connected phase, depending on how the home is wired. Lights on L1 might remain on, but a 3-phase heat pump or a stove on L2 and L3 would not operate.
To achieve true whole-home backup, many European customers have resorted to installing three separate Powerwall units—one per phase—an expensive undertaking for the average homeowner.
The 3P Advantage
Powerwall 3P addresses these limitations by incorporating a native three-phase inverter. Rather than stacking three units, a single Powerwall 3P can connect to all three phases at once, balance loads across phases, power 3-phase equipment directly from one battery, and simplify installation and regulatory compliance.
Detailed specifications for this unit have not yet been released.
3P for North America
Although aimed at European customers, Powerwall 3P could also be useful in North America. Many businesses operate on 3-phase commercial power, and Powerwall 3P may simplify and reduce installation costs for straightforward backup needs without moving up to the cost and complexity of Megapack.
